“SPIISRY” – A novel initiative of ICAR-IISR launched

ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research launched a new initiative christened “SPIISRY” in its continuing quest to support primary producers of spices while bringing good quality spices and allied products to the consumers. The “SPIISRY” was inaugurated by Dr. T Janakiram, Assistant Director General, (HS II) ICAR on 12 July 2019. Inaugurating the aesthetically designed outlet of the venture, Dr. Janakiram said that such innovations leveraging the linkages of the institute with the primary producers and entrepreneurs shall essay a new chapter in the development of the agricultural commodity retail marketing sector through facilitating consumer access to high quality produce authenticated by the research institution. Dr. K Nirmal Babu, Director ICAR IISR, Dr. R N Pal, former Assistant Director General (Plantation Crops), Dr. V S Korikanthimath, Former Director ICAR CCARI, Goa, Dr. Srikanth Kulkarni, Former Professor and Head Plant Pathology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad and other dignitaries graced the occasion. The outlet is conceived as an outlet for good quality spices and allied value added products sourced from verified primary producers, incubates of ICAR IISR and other sister institutes. More than 50 products is being made available at the outlet at present. Apart from spices, spice powders and well ness products from spices, technology inputs for farming of spices and other crops can also be purchased from the outlet. The product range and diversity is expected to increase tremendously in a few months through collaboration with other ICAR institutes and their incubatees. The SPIISRY shall be the torchbearer for the efforts of research institutions in creating a direct interface between primary producers of spices and the ultimate consumers addressing the concerns of quality, sustainability of production practices and food safety.
